My friend Christine Selinger and her son have done something that I think deserves some kind of award. Her son's favourite book is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, and for his school project, Chris decided they should use cake. Yes, this is totally edible, and indeed, was eaten that very day by the class.
Four handmade cakes, two different kinds of homemade icing, jello, three different kinds of brown sugar for the sand, all adds up to one enormously creative ode to a great book.
If you've read the book, you'll recognize items in the model. Turtle eggs. The sinking plane. Berries. The skunk. Moose, wolf, bear. The cave. Is this seriously cool or what? What do you think? Mom of the Year Award material?

That is AMAZING!!!! Hatchet is one of my favourite books - I often read it aloud to my students. There's at least one Gary Paulsen fanatic in every room (he's a great author!). Congratulations to them on a great job. I hope he got top marks for that one!

THIS IS SO AMAZING!!!!!! Brian Robeson feels like a personal friend around here (I bawled at the end of Brian's Winter when I realized it was all over...thankfully Paulsen wrote two more books).

That is SO VERY COOL! If one day I have a book and a kid does something like that based on my book, I think I'll die of happiness. That's the coolest thing every. Yay boys who are willing to do stuff like that!

That is SUCH a cool project. I'd be worried that maybe Mom would get stuck doing too much of it, but if the student makes a major contribution, he deserves an A. :)

I love reliving my past with my kids and doing school projects with them. My arts and crafts gifts come out. Its a lot of fun making a set from wires and paper mache. Then painting the set and adding figures and trees and such.
