Ever wonder where deer sleep in a snowstorm?

... on my snowshoe trail apparently!

We had a mother of a storm here yesterday. When I went snowshoeing today, I found these deer beds on my trail. You can see where they dug down, and then how much snow fell while they were all comfy in bed.

see the frozen indent made by the deer's leg in the middle of the bed?

What cool things have you found on your trail?

I envy you the snow!
Bummer, I'm twenty-one minutes late to this post. Losing my Ninja skills.

That is very cool! I assumed they would bed down, but I wasn't sure. Great photos! :)

I've never seen a deer bed before!!! Does your dog go nuts if he smells the deer??

Cool. I had no idea. Unlike Alex, I'm glad we don't have all the snow.

I haven't been on any trails but I do enjoy virtually accompanying you.

I have often wondered where deer bed down in the winter! I hope they have company to keep them warm.

As for the snow, well, I'm of two minds. On the one hand I'm not much of a fan of winter but if it snows then it can't be really cold, which is what's in store for us tonight. I'm afraid zero is just not my favorite temperature.

Actually, I always worry about the deer when it's cold, rainy, snowy, or in the summer when it's 100 degrees plus. I guess they're tough little creatures to survive. Great photos.

Very cool. I tend to look at neat plant matter. I always love when the first trout lilies poke their heads up in the spring, and finding trilliums is always a big deal, too. One time I saw a massive black snake (easily 4 feet long) climbing up the side of the tree. Snake spottings, even harmless ones, aren't my favorite.

I need a wilderness vacation! But we finally have snow here! It's blowing and gusting and is actually supposed to stick and accumulate. Did I say I wanted snow?

We have a large hawk that has designated our neighborhood as his turf (we live outside of town, surrounded by fields and a pig farm) and he sits on our fence once a day. I need to post the photos I got when he sat on our deck railing two weeks ago. I thought our cats were going to come unglued.

that looks very cold! I just assumed that is what they did, and I guess I was right.

When we first moved here (from busy So. Calif) I saw some deer in our back yard and called my mom "Mom!" I said - so excited - "We have deer!"

Fast forward a few years and I'm not quite as excited. My kiddos still love it when they come around but I'm tired of them eating my ENTIRE garden!

We also had a cougar trolling the creekbed behind our house last year. That was exciting.

Neat, I always wondered. But... do they cover themselves with anything?
