Scat messaging

This is the message I received this morning from our new neighbours

click to view in all its glory
Right at the end of our driveway - an impressive pile of wolf poop. And I mean a PILE. This can't be from just one animal, therefore this required a community effort. What does this message mean?

  • We're big so don't mess with us.
  • This is the line into our territory. You own the driveway, we own the rest.
  • Hello there, dear neighbours, here's our card. Call us.
  • We know you are dogsitting a tasty little morsel of a Chihuahua right now.
The past few days we've had lots of wolf excitement. One evening I looked out the window in time to see the dog running for her life onto the deck with a huge brown timber wolf on her tail. The wolf came right to the bottom of the stairs before he noticed me standing there, and then wheeled around and took off down the driveway.

Two nights ago the dogs and I were walking in the dark and found ourselves in the middle of the pack taking down a deer. We didn't see anything, but the noises surrounding us had me hustling home with my feeble little headlamp frantically scanning around behind us. In the morning we found the evidence of a fight to the finish. The tracks told the story of how the wolves went around downwind, and then launched the attack. The deer went down, got up, went down again. We have many, many deer in our area, so it must be a good spot for the wolves to hang for a while.

In the evenings, the pack sings. They sometimes wake us in the middle of the night. They obviously have some pups who can't sing yet, but try to make up for it by being the loudest. Sled dog pups do this too. It's hilarious to listen to.

Any wolf stories out there? Anyone care to decipher to scat code?

Oh my. I believe you deciphered the scat code perfectly. Okay, I am really scared now. Or I would be if I lived where you live. Wolves are scary.

That is quite the message they left for you! Hope you and the chihuahua stay safe :)

I've loved wolves since reading Farley Mowat's Never Cry Wolf. I love the scene where Mowat's finally found their den and set up his cameras. They don't show up forever - he turns around and they're watching him. Love it :)

Ha! That is bizarre. Unless of course a two-legged neighbor was playing a trick on you.
i lived with some part-wolves for awhile and never saw behavior like that. I did love to listen to them sing.

Wow. That is so crazy! I would have been scurrying home, too.

Okay, it's been about four years since I've seen wolves. They were chasing a herd of Caribou but to the best of my knowledge did not take one down.

That's amazing! I wish I could hear.

We have a coyote story - they were howling up a storm on the other side of the street (this was in Walker Basin, CA) and my one-year-old didn't like it...

DD: *with a worried look on her face* yotees...yotees.
Me: *screaming out the window* BE QUIET!!! (except I said shut up, which isn't very nice)

It worked though. They stopped and didn't start up again.

I would never go out at night again!
I've never seen a wolf in the wild, but I've seen a few coyote.

YIKES! I know you haven't invited me for a sleepover, but I think I'll pass if you do. That's really scary, Terry! I wouldn't be roaming around at night for a while. BE SAFE!

Have to admit I wondered the same thing as Tricia. Could it be a neighbor that piled it up? Somehow that seems less strange, but still very odd, behavior. I suppose as long as the deer are plentiful, you'll stay off the endangered species list.

Yikes - That is a gross and crappy thing to do! lol

We have coyotes in our woods and we see red foxes quite often, but no wolves. Thank goodness.
