What are copy edits?
I've heard the term copy edits before, but never really knew what it meant. Here's what copy edits mean when you are working with 4RV Publishing.
When the designer lays out the manuscript, the text does what it wants. It sometimes leaves things called "orphans". These are lonely little words left at the ends of paragraphs. It has never occurred to me until now to notice these when I read books.
Another thing that happens is names get hyphenated at the ends of lines. So the designer must go through and highlight all these annoying words that mess up the look of the page, and send them to the writer. The writer must come up with another way to say that sentence or paragraph so it behaves.
This can sometimes be painful when the PERFECT sentence must be changed to avoid a nasty orphan. But it is also another chance to change anything that you thought was perfect at the time, but months later, sounds sort of lame. So this is a good thing. I'm loving this whole process.
Except when you suddenly notice that all the spelling is Canadian, and the publisher wants it American. Panic sets in when you realize that you don't really know all the words that are different and you google it and see that there are A LOT of words that we spell differently! I may have to send the senior editor some chocolates.

Five Random things in my room
This is a fun meme - please consider yourself tagged if you are reading this. List five random things in your room. Go.
2. Frog collection
Yes. I'm openly admitting this.
3. Used dog toys
Strategically placed so that I step on them with bare feet whenever I get up.
4. Dead things
Replica of monster fish and snowy owl found on side of highway
5. Bowl of rocks
North Channel of Lake Huron grows Muse-Rocks. Look into their depths and be inspired.
1. My bent-shaft paddle
This is one of my most treasured objects. It has been dipped in every lake in Quetico Park. It has won a few canoe races. If it ever broke, a little piece of my soul could very well shrivel up and drop off.Yes. I'm openly admitting this.

Jack London? Very cool.
Fellow Elevensie member Randy Russell had this fun test on his blog. I tried it with two different ms and both times came up with this. Give it a try - it's good for your ego.
Thank you for all the cover love comments on the art for DOGSLED DREAMS. I have the best commenters!

Cover art for Dogsled Dreams
This is the full jacket art for DOGSLED DREAMS made by the talented Aidana, 4RV's art director. The text will be added after the designer finishes the layout of the book. If you can picture it, the cover will show the dogs, and the back of the book will have the sled and musher.
This is from a scene in the book when Rebecca is running the dogs at night in a snowstorm.
The illustrator will also be doing black and white drawings for each chapter. I hope to have a few of those to share with you as well.
Once the text is added to the art, I'll be able to start marketing. I plan on getting a professional trailer made, bookmarks, countdown widget, postcards and many other exciting ideas.

Kayaking the south shore of Manitoulin Island

We've made it back safely from our kayak trip to the Duck Islands! Here's a few shots of the gorgeousness that is Northern Lake Huron.

We had competitions to see who could hold their arm under water for the longest. I lost at 20 seconds before the ache in my bone became too much. That's not a lot of time to hustle back into the kayak if I dumped. So the plan was to stay IN the kayak. Thankfully, the winds were kind.
Now it's back to work. I'm way behind on my blogging, writing and the thing I do for a living. But so worth it.
Thank you all for your awesome comments on my first vlog and agent news! You guys rock!

I have an AGENT!!
Yes, I've been sitting on this for the eternity that it took for the contract to come all the way from California! My spectacular news -
She read ICE DOGS, and said she loved it! I really can't believe it -
We're still celebrating over here if anyone wants to come for brownies, skinny dipping and Crabby dancing. (everyone except the dog who is deathly afraid of Mr. Crabby for some reason. I have no idea why, it's not like I've chased her around the house with it or crawled to her bed and woke her up with it.)
I'm just VIBRATING with joy to be able to share this news with all my blogging friends. I may even post a vlog in the near future involving an attempt to do a celebratory roll in my kayak.
Cold querying DOES work. Yes, you too can get discovered in the slush. If I can, so can you!
CARYN WISEMAN
has offered to represent me!
*cue sun beams shining down from the heavens and warblers singing*
She read ICE DOGS, and said she loved it! I really can't believe it -
MY DREAM AGENT!
The phone call from Caryn took the shock out of turning forty last week. (as in what the... I'm FORTY? How did that happen?) and I couldn't ask for a better way to celebrate!
